So the drums have come a long way and have a long way to go. They've around since the dawn of man - and they aren't leaving soon, considering they are the foundations of most songs. Why Guitar Players Don't Always Make Good Bass Players

  It has probably happened thousands of times in the history of modern music. The bass player either quits unexpectedly, or a new band just cannot find a bass player. So in comes a guitar player who may or may not already be in the band, and volunteers to play bass. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

 There are several reasons why it is difficult for a guitar player to just switch to bass and do the job adequately. First of all, a guitar players job is to yes, play rhythm guitar parts at times, but also to play lead guitar parts. And guitar players with their inherent egos, would almost always rather play the lead parts because when they do, they are the center of attention. And we all love to be the center of attention. There are thousands of songs that have great guitar parts that people will remember forever. But when was the last time you heard someone whistling a bass part from some popular song? Bass players just get no respect.

 The role of the bass guitar player is to put the bottom in the music. He must work with the drummer in a structured way to lay a foundation for the other musicians. When the bass player and drummer are working together, the music feels good to them and listeners. When the other musicians put their parts on top of this foundation, the package is complete.

 Because guitar players are used to playing lead guitar, most have a difficult time playing the mostly simple bass lines required when they switch instruments. It is the rare disciplined musician who can make the change without weeks or months of practicing his new instrument.

 Bass guitar parts vary from the simple one and five Country Music bass lines, to the one, three, five lines of jazz and swing. There are bassists who play very busy bass lines but for the most part, bass players blend in and just do their job. Sometimes you don't even notice the bass player, at least not until he drops out. Then you definitely notice him.

 There are and have been bass guitar players that have demanded notice and been stars in their own right, like the late Jaco Pastorious and Nashville Ace Victor Wooten. But most bass players are not and don't try to be the stars of the show. Many guitar players have difficulty adjusting to this part of their new role.

 As a guitar player who made the switch to bass and then had the good fortune to work with some of the biggest names in the music business, my advice to any guitar players wanting or needing to become bass players is to take some time and really listen to what the bass is doing in some of the music you will be playing. Learn the bass lines to some of those songs, get a drum machine and play along with the songs using the drum machine. Tune your ear to the kick drum and train your fingers or pick if you use one, to strike the string just as the kick drum is hitting the head of the bass drum. It is the combination of the kick drum sound and the bass note together that gives the music that thud that hits you in the chest and makes you feel the music. If you are ahead of or behind the beat, the band will sound off and the music won't sound right.

 Playing guitar and playing bass are like being in two different worlds and demands two different ways of thinking. If you find yourself at that crossroads where you have to make that decision, remember what a bass player is and what he does. If you are not comfortable playing second banana to the guitar player or keyboard player, if you can't work in a controlled manner laying the foundation for the rest of the band, then admit it and stick to guitar. You have to love what you're doing to be successful at it. Remember that.

Make Music, Make Money - Audience Participation Secrets

Audience participation is one of the most important aspects to a successful performance.  I've discoverd a number of 'secrets' to getting people engaged with my performances and I'd like to share some of them with you.

Dancing

Whether your playing at a private party or bar gig, chances are, some folks will want to dance.

Nothing gets the 'energy' up like having people hit the dance floor. Many times, it will 'make or break' the night. If people dance, they smile and have a good time. If you leave 'em with a smile on their faces, they'll think you were great.

Many times I've played gigs and knocked out a 'sure thing' dance tune, like 'Brown Eyed Girl' or 'Mustang Sally,' only to have nobody dance. When this happens, I pull out a 'little secret' tactic.

I start by approaching a couple. If your playing a private party, it can be the host couple, but, if not, any couple will do. I ask them to dance to the next song, as a way to 'get things going.' Then, After one-verse/one-chorus I stop the music and tell them to both to, 'pick a new partner.'

I repeat the process until everyone in the room is dancing.

This tactic works time and time-again and always makes the event just a little better.

Percussion

Here's another way to get your audience, 'in the game.'

1. Shaky Eggs - Purchase 10-20 percussive 'eggs' from Sam Ash or another retailer. LP makes a great 'egg' at a reasonable price. Distribute one-egg per table. Give a short demonstration to the crowd on their proper use. Encourage the audience to play along with your songs.

Collect the 'eggs' at the end of the show. You'll lose a couple on occasion, but the increased tips will more than cover the expense.

You can also order 'eggs' from LP with custom printing on them (LPMusic.com). So, the 'eggs' that get 'legs' still have a lasting value to you.

Extra Microphone

There's almost always someone the crowd that either sings, or thinks they can sing.

Setup an extra microphone and put out a blanket invitation to the audience to 'join in whenever the mood strikes them'.

As scary as this may seem, it's rarely turns out poorly.

Even if somebody can't 'carry a tune,' just their attempt will cause the audience to become engaged.

Request Sheets

Make a list of all of the songs that you play. List the song and the artist. Put 20-copies in plastic protective sleeves. Distribute the sheets on the tables and at the bar.

Make a game out of it...

Tell everyone that they must pick a song off of the list. You'll be choosing people at random, so they better be ready with their pick!

This gets the crowd buzzing and it will make for a more enjoyable/profitable gig for you.

Music Trivia

Pick a great 'one-hit-wonder' tune, (I like, 'Hold Me Now' by the Thompson Twins.) Tell the audience, 'the first person to tell me the original band/artist for this next song wins one of my CDs!'  This does two things.

1. It makes the audience pay attention to you and the song
2. It draws attention to your CD without having to 'get in their face'

The biggest Bass fishing secret is that there isn't a real Bass fishing secret at all, there is no secret to catching Bass, no more than there is a secret to catching fish of any type.

Having said that there are certain things which you can do to help himself catch more Bass. Perhaps the most important thing is to set out to catch just one kind of Bass, as I'm sure you know there are several different varieties for instance the Small Mouth Bass, the White Bass, the Large Mouth Bass, and many more. Having decided which particular type of Bass you are trying to catch you can then decide on the appropriate bait and tackle.

In this short article I will deal with catching Large Mouth Bass but the principles discussed apply to any type of Bass,the important thing in trying to catch Large Mouth Bass or any other type of Bass for that matter is to know what their natural prey is. The nice thing about the Large Mouth Bass is it will take almost anything that is floating on the water from flies right up to small birds and chicks.

The thing you have to decide is whether you're going to use live bait or artificial, if you decide to use artificial I have found a correctly used jig and pig combination produces very good results but you do have to give it a far try out. With Bass fishing bait local knowledge is very important and even though some fishermen like to keep these things secret it is surprising what you can learn by listening carefully when other fishermen are talking.

The next important thing to decide is where to go fishing for your Bass, in the case of Large Mouth Bass there is a very wide choice, as you will find this fish in both rivers or lakes, they are usually found quite close to shore, hiding under low foliage perhaps or near rocks waiting for suitable prey. If you decide to try the jig and pig bait, it will work well in both these situations.

The Large Mouth Bass can be fished for at most times of the year, but fall does seem to be the best time because the fish are busy building up reserves for winter and so will take any bait they can.

I suppose the true Bass fishing secret is to acquire experience of fishing in your area and to enjoy yourself while you are acquiring that experience.
