Opting for Custom Made Drum Sets
Is there actually any need to customise your drum set when you can get a ready made one? After all what is the use of custom made drum sets? First let us see what composes a drum kit? Also called drum set or trap set, a drum kit is a collection of drums, cymbals and some more percussion instruments, if needed. Cowbell wood block, chimes or tambourines can form the repertoire of a drum set of a single drummer.
The hardware of either ready made drum kits or a custom made one consists of drum stands, hoops, tension rods, drum pedals, cymbal stands, snare stands and more. A stand is provided for the hi-hat also, if the drummer likes to keep it that way. Here comes the utility of personalised drum sets.
The individual instruments that the drummer uses in his drum kit depends on the variety he holds in his hands including brushes, sticks and mallets. In this context, the bass drum and the hi hat cymbal differ a bit as they use foot operated pedals.
Custom made drum sets are opted for not only to satisfy personal preferences but also to make a style statement. The components of a drum kit are determined by the music styles. The playing style and the music style vary with theme, subject and the drummer.
The bass drums and the snare drums are the primary instruments that are used in most forms of rock music. In rock these are used to generate a drum beat. Where as, if we consider the jazz music, the drumbeat is created from the use of hi hat cymbals and the ride cymbal. Brushed snare drum and hi hats are also used in the above scenario.
Apart from musical styles and personal preference, the drummer has to keep some factors in mind. He has to have some good financial resource or his desire of making a good drum kit would get hampered.
Another factor for consideration is the availability of transportation options for the drummer. For playing and performance needs the drummer has to travel long to reach the destination. If he has a big collection in his drum set, then he might face transporting difficulty. So he, again, has to consider his financial resource to know exactly the constraints he can face if he goes on increasing his collection.
In the hardware part, as mentioned earlier, there are cymbals, tom-tom stands and hi hat stands. It is considered to be part of the base drum kit and the drummers like these two to be included in their customised drum sets as well.
Bass drum pedals, drum thrones i.e. seats or stool to sit, are the breakable part, as referred in the drum parlance. These items are usually customized as they are likely to go through a lot of adjustments and replacements. Drumheads and cymbals are most likely to get the customization effect. These tweaking are considered an essential part of the custom made drum sets.

Wood Flooring - Everything You Need To Know
The elegant look of a hardwood floor can add warmth and character to any room in a home. The natural characteristics of wood add depth and a visual appearance that many other types of floors try to duplicate. With the demand for hardwood flooring growing manufacturer's are enhancing their ranges to meet this demand, with better quality finishes and superior construction techniques.
Hardwood floors come in a wide variety of wood species, colours and widths. Besides the classic hardwoods (like red oak, white oak, maple and ash) many manufacturers now offer exotic hardwood species from all over the World. Exotic hardwoods give homeowners the chance to better express their own personal decorating tastes with a more unique looking floor. With so many different types of hardwood flooring now available it is sometime hard to choice which is best suited to you.
Different Types of Wood Flooring
Solid wooden floors are one solid piece of wood that have tongue and groove sides and come in either pre-finished or unfinished styles. Solid wood floors are sensitive to moisture and it is not recommended to install these floors below ground level, or directly over a concrete slab. These floors are for nail-down installations only. You can refinish, or recoat solid wood floors several times, which adds to their appeal and to their long life. There are solid floors that are over 100 years old and are still in good condition.
All solid wood floors will react to the presence of moisture. In the winter heating months, moisture leaves the wood causing the floor to contract which leaves unsightly gaps between each plank. In the summer months when the humidity is higher the wood will expand and the gaps will disappear. If there is too much moisture it may cause the wood planks to cup, or buckle. This is why it is important when installing a solid strip floor to leave the proper expansion area around the perimeter and to acclimatize the wood prior to installation.
Engineered wood floors - These floors are constructed from several wood plies that are glued together. The centre core is generally a softer wood material and is used to make the tongue and groove. A hardwood finish layer is glued on top of the centre core and another softer wood ply is attached underneath the core. This top ply is also called the finish layer and can be constructed of almost any wood specie.
Wood always wants to expand in a certain direction. In the presence of moisture solid wood planks will always expand across the width of the planks, rather than down the length of the boards. To avoid this problem, manufacturers of engineered planks place each ply in the opposite direction of each other. This is called cross-ply construction. Once the wood layers are glued together the plies will counteract each other which will stop the plank from growing or shrinking with changes in the humidity. Engineered wood floors are designed for the floating installation and can be glued together or some now come with a click system.
Veneer wood floors are very similar to laminate floors. The only difference is that with a veneer flooring to top wear layer is a thin piece or real hardwood instead of a photographic image as in laminates. Veneer flooring is usually around 8mm in thickness with the top hardwood layer being around 0.7mm. Advantages of a veneer floors are that they are fast and easy to install and you have a real hardwood floor.
Factory Pre-finished Wood Flooring
Most factory finished hardwood floors have several coats of finish applied to the wood's surface. As example, many wood floor companies are applying 6-10 coats of a ultra-violet (UV) cured urethane. This would be extremely difficult for someone to duplicate on a job site finish, not to mention how many days it would take. This is one of the reasons why many flooring mechanics, flooring retailers, and builders are pushing pre-finished hardwood floors. Instead of taking several days to install and finish a new hardwood floor a pre-finished hardwood floor is generally done in one day.
The most common finishes are:
UV-cured - Factory finishes that are cured with Ultra Violet lights versus heat.
Polyurethane - A clear, tough and durable finish that is applied as a wear layer.
Acrylic-urethane - A slightly different chemical make up than Polyurethane with the same benefits.
Aluminium Oxide - Added to the urethane finish for increased abrasion resistance of the wear layer, which is becoming extremely popular on the better grade wood floors.
Acrylic Impregnated - Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer over the wood.
Unfinished Wood Flooring
If you want a custom stained hardwood floor, or a wood floor to match existing trim than a unfinished hardwood floor is your answer. Unfinished means you start with a bare hardwood floor and than the floor is sanded, stained, and finished in the home. This can be quite a mess and the process does take several days, but your floor will have a finish to you requirements.
Installation Options
Nail Down - Secret nails are used with a wood flooring nailer and mallet to attach the flooring to the sub floor. Solid Strip floors or Plank floors can only be installed on wooden sub-floors or on batons.
Glue Down - Engineered wood floors and parquets can be glued down. This is when you spread the recommended glue all over the sub floor and lay the flooring into the glue.
Floating - This is when a thin underlay is placed between the wood flooring and the sub floor. A recommended wood glue is then applied in the tongue and groove of each plank to hold the planks together. Engineered

African Djembe Drums Over the Top Musical Flavor
One of the biggest influences in percussion musical instruments has been the introduction of African Djembe drums. Even though these unique, handmade drums have become popular with musicians, bands and music lovers many people do not understand the rich heritage of the simple Djembe.
These are traditional musical instruments that were first designed to be used in ceremonial celebrations but they have also been used as a method of communication for different tribes. The cultural roots of the Djembe drums are linked mainly to the Mandinka natives who live in West Africa.
There are a number of drums that are used throughout Africa, but if you look closely you will also notice the many differences that exist. Most of these differences are fairly small, but that does not diminish their importance.
If you look back through years of history you will discover that Djembe is the favored percussion instrument used by the Mandinka people and these drums came into existence during the early period of the 12th century.
You can expect to find these African drums being used in Mali or Kayes. This is also where many of these drums are made.
For certain African tribes these drums are an important part of many rituals, ceremonies and dances. The rhythm is referred to as iansa' and it can be heard during wedding celebrations, full moon celebrations and other special occasions.
In Mali the usual cover for a djembe drum is a cured goatskin. It has often been said that the skin of goats from West Africa are the best type to use for the drums because these animal skins produce richer sounds.
You may find other names listed for African Djembe drums including the terms, sanbanyi, yembe, djembe and jembe. No matter which name is used, the type of drum referred to is still the same.
The traditional shape of African djembe drums is one of the things that make these instruments unique. The silhouette looks similar to a stemmed goblet and this tapered styling is one of the most identifiable features that which make one of these drums so easy to identify.
Djembe drums are hollowed out by hand and then the open top is covered with a smooth animal skin. Only one piece of wood is used to create each drum. The top is rounded and the diagonal measurement of the drumhead is about 12-14 inches.
You are supposed to tap out the beat on Djembe drums with your hands. Occasionally you may see someone use a stick to beat on these drums but this is not how the instruments were intended to be used.
Today African Djembe Drums have become very popular among musicians in many countries. The sounds and tones are rich and impressive. These percussion instruments are also relatively easy to play, but it may take a long time to master the nuances that create different tones and rhythms.

How To Take Care Of Your Drum Heads
Taking care to drum set is essential to the professional drummer. One of the most important things take a look at is your drum heads. If you are new to drumming here are some tips with regard to your drum heads, when and how to change them.
One of the most important things to do regularly is change the drum heads. In time, the skin will eventually weaken where you strike it the most, causing the tension to change. A weaker skin is more likely to dent, or even puncture with harder hits. In addition, a weaker skin will have little rebound for your stick. One of the best guidelines and knowing when you should change your drum heads is just by feel. When the sound changes or the rebound changes to good indication of the new to change the heads.
Snare drum heads usually need to be changed twice as often as tom heads. The reason for this is common sense. You spend more time on your snare drum head than any other surface except maybe your high hat cymbals or you ride cymbals. Just like your other drum heads you'll know it's time to change the snare head when I feel changes or the sound changes. You may want to carry a spare head in your kit at all times because the head tends to crack at the worst possible time.
Once the drum heads have been removed check the bearing edges for cracks in the shell or bearing edge deformities. It does no harm to take a candle and gently rub a bit of wax around the bearing edges to help smooth movement of the skin over the edge. Always ensure that all lumps of wax are removed before fitting the head.
Before you begin to play, rub a little bit of clear water into the back of the skin. This lets the skin stretch a little. If you are playing in a warm place the skin will tighten up again as you play, so you will probably need to do this more than once. If the skin has become a bit too damp and is very slack, it can be tightened by vigorous rubbing with the palm of your hand.
Know that the skins or the heads will shift and change in the first few weeks of ownership, so you will probably need to readjust attention and tuning while you're at heads adjust and stretch.
Lastly, when choosing drum heads there were a few things to consider. There's much debate as to whether clear drum heads or quoted drum heads are better. Neither are coated better. It just depends on what sound you're looking for. Clear heads will give you a brighter harder attack while coated head typically use you all warmer denser sound. Rock and hip-hop typically uses clear heads while jazz and big band opts for the coated heads.
