Thom Yorke Tickets - Fitter, Happier and Performing His Own Material
Radiohead wouldn't quite be the Radiohead it has come to be without the help of Thom Yorke, and that's not just because of the singer's haunting vocals. He often comes off as the antithesis of the usual rock star frontman, twitchy and weird rather than charming (not that he can't be charming). That's given the band an image of being "different"-more experimental, perhaps more intelligent, and certainly more strange and wonderful than what typically passes for pop.
So naturally, rumors that Yorke would eventually develop his own solo career have been welcomed news to fans. He released his first solo record, The Eraser, in 2006. It featured a quieter, more glitch-based sound than Radiohead's typical work. But as exciting as it was to see Yorke recording his own material, fans wondered when the temperamental and reclusive star would start performing it live.
Last year, they got their answer. Though songs like "Cymbal Rush" would occasionally get mixed into Radiohead sets, Thom Yorke had never stepped on stage specifically to perform his material. In 2009, he started performing with a band comprised of Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's producer; Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers; indie-rocker Beck; Joey Waronker, a well-known session drummer; and percussionist Mauro Refosco.
In February of 2010, Yorke formally announced the band's name as Atoms for Peace, along with a concert date at the renowned Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Fans are eagerly awaiting new tour dates, which can be found at StubHub.
There was a time when music critics speculated the fate of Radiohead. They seemed to be spinning apart, with Yorke in particular seeming to buckle under the pressure of the spotlights. He was known for snapping at interviewers and giving curt answers when he felt journalists were overstepping their boundaries. For a good period of the '90s, he perceived people to be overstepping boundaries left and right.
But out of the crucible the band went through, emerging on the other side with a new sound and the nearly unanimous respect of critics and audiences all over the world. Today, the band is in a much better place and Yorke seems to be, as well.
Having a backing band will surely give him more freedom to pursue his own interests, while Radiohead can still function as a unit. Yorke has always been an artist who needs multiple outlets for expression. After all, he's a vital part of the band's artwork design, taking on the moniker of "Dr. Tchock," a collaborator with artist Stanley Donwood, who is responsible for most of the band's album cover art.
What will be interesting is to see how, if at all, the band's relationship with Yorke changes. Hopefully, they'll both develop in tandem, with Radiohead taking on material that has more of a foundation in traditional indie-rock while Yorke can experiment with music that's at times quieter or only features him on piano, say.
