Waxing and Tuning Tips For Every Ski and Snowboard Sport
Everybody wants the best ride possible whether they ski or snowboard. The difference waxing and tuning your skis can make to your day can be surprising. In situations where the conditions are less than ideal, the difference is even more noticeable. Where you live and spend most of your time skiing are the main determining factors. Complacency is easy to fall into when you always ski at the same place. Here are some waxing and tuning tips to help you get the most out of your skis.
For anyone who doesn't have the patience to properly tune and wax their gear, at least consider this. If you want your skis or snowboard to perform a lot better, at least use some wax on them. Cold wax is not ideal, but if you apply it to the bases as best you can, it will work to some extent. If you choose to do that, it's better than nothing, but don't expect the same kind of high performance you'll receive from skis that have been hot-waxed.
The best edge angle to use when edging your skis is the one that the manufacturer recommends. Of course, if you know what you're doing, you can decide this for yourself. But until you're more experienced, we highly suggest you follow what the manufacturer recommends. Edge angle variations can be from 1 to 3 degrees. You may want to use a file guide in addition to the right kind of file. File guides are not necessary, but they are recommended for the inexperienced. A diamond stone is used after you're done filing the edges. You should remember to dampen the diamond stone first to get the best effect.
A brush should be used to remove any wax from the base that's left after you've edged your skis. It's best to have two brushes for this job, a horse hair or other stiff brush to begin with. To get the best wax job possible, a nylon brush should then be used. The way to brush is from the tip to the tail of the skis. When no more wax is getting brushed out, you'll know that the job is complete.
Skiing and snowboarding can be fun and exciting, and keeping your equipment tuned is one aspect of these sports you can't overlook.
We suggest you take the time to learn how to do it so you'll know how to best take care of your own equipment. If you want to take your winter sports seriously, this is something worth learning about. While you'll find some great and knowledgeable ski and board pros in the shops, we tend to feel that it's just best to know what's been done to the equipment and to what degree of quality. No matter what advice you get, when it comes down to it, the gear is yours. By properly maintaining your ski and snowboard gear, you'll be making yourself safer and more able to reach higher levels in these great sports.
