Naturally, as with any item, as soon as a new drum set is purchased and becomes "used", it drops in value.  If you are on a tight budget, or if you just want to find the best deal possible when looking for a drum set, a used drum set can be a great option.  Of course any used drum sets should be closely inspected for signs of wear or damage, but there can be a significant price difference between a used drum set and a new drum set which makes it worth the extra effort.

A beginner is going to sound the same on a brand new multi-thousand dollar drum set as they would on a cheap used drum set.  Plus if later you change your mind and determine drum playing does not work with you, unlike a new drum set which will drop in value the second it becomes purchased, a used drum set will not lose value and can most likely be resold for about the same price you purchased it for.
