How a Felt Rug Pad Protects Rugs and Floors
Rug pads were made to prolong the life of a rug. Over the years, a rug pad has become known to also prolong the life of a hardwood or wood floor. The proper rug pad can protect both rug and floor to prevent premature wear to either. The short term price to pay for a quality rug pad is a small price to pay to protect your investments in the long term.
Not all rug pads will protect rugs and floors as they should. The best rug pad for hardwood and wood floors, as well as for all area rugs, is a solid felt rug pad. The fact that the rug pad is solid allows it to completely prevent the back of the rug from rubbing and wearing against the hard floor. A solid pad will also completely cover the rough back of a rug and this prevents any damage to the hardwood or wood floors. There are two types of felt rug pads that work best at protecting rug and floor.
A felt and rubber combination rug pad is best for rugs that may slip on the floor. Here, the rubber prevents slipping and keeps the rug in place. this is especially useful for smaller rugs or hallway runners that normally slip. The felt surface contains a slight texture and this is meant to hold the rug to the rug pad. The lower rubber surface contains a unique pattern within the rubber which allows more rubber to be in contact with more floor, allowing maximum grip. Many people ask me whether or not the rubber will stick to the floor. The answer is that if it is natural rubber, it is safe for all hard floors. Be careful of the waffle looking rug pads as these are usually a nylon or plastic with a chemical and these can mark the floor. The entire rug pad is 1/4 of an inch thick and dense enough to resist the pressure of the back of the rug from rubbing against the floor as well as the pressure that can happen to the floor from heavy furniture.
For rugs that are heavier or larger and rubber is not necessary, a quality 100% solid felt rug pad is great. This rug pad does not contain rubber, latex or chemicals and protects the back of a rug as well as the hard floor. The solid felt rug pad is about 1/4 of an inch thick and adds comfort and protection. Since it is not a non slip rug pad, the solid felt rug pad should be used under rugs that do not tend to slip.
The right solid felt rug pad will provide years of protection to an area rug and the floor that it is on. Be sure to use either a solid recycled felt rug pad or a felt and natural rubber rug pad. Using a less quality rug pad can eventually end in damage to either your rug, your floor, or both.
