Detective Tom Saccenti awarded the Medal of Courage

As he exited the front doors of his local church, on the way to his grandfather's funeral, Detective Tom Saccenti never thought that he would be called into action in an attempt to save a man's life.

It was a Saturday afternoon and off duty detective Tom Saccenti had stopped by his local church to assist in painting some vacation bible school posters for an upcoming church event. As he exited the church to drive to his grandfather-in-laws funders Detective Tom Saccenti looked up to see a motorcycle driving at a high rate of speed turn the corner by the church. As it did this the tires caught the gravel and the motorcyclist began to lose control of the bike. Tom watched as the drive, who was not wearing a helmet, slid down the roadway and ended up laying in the middle of the church entrance.

Detective Saccenti asked one of the church members to contact an ambulance as he rushed to the scene. Upon arrival Detective Saccenti found that the motorcyclist was not breathing. He began to administer emergency first aid and performed rescue breathing for the injured man. While doing this the motorcyclist began to breathe again just as the emergency medical technicians arrived. Detective Saccenti states, "This was a team effort, without the quick action of the church members in calling 911 and relaying the needed information clearly to the dispatcher we could have lost vital minutes". The motorcyclist has been transported to Toledo and is in the ICU unit.
